One of the things that sets this apart from ... other folk bands of the time was the combination of Tesluk's rambunctious guitar and Andrews' use of vintage analogue synth ... well, I guess they weren't vintage at the time. Afterglow von Phase II ist ein Sammletstück , ein Stück alternativer Musikgeschichte, der Beweis dass es Underground gab, bevor Underground populär wurde -- und noch dazu musikalisch ein absoluter Hinhörer. The sound is pretty close to CHANGES and their sweeter ballads, but with a heavy usage of analogue vintage synthesizers, probably the most awesome ones from that time, and progressive, psychedelic action on drums and electric guitars... Vocals are provided by both of the gentlemen. Tesluk is always Tesluk, but also Mr. Andrews has a nice voice going. Deze groep uit New Mexico klinkt als geen ander, hun folk bevat naast de zeemzoete stemmetjes en het weemoedig gevoel ook rare wendingen dat gaat van progressieve rockinvloeden tot geschifte synthjes die je eerder in opkomende new wavegroepjes van weleer uit de States zou terugvinden. ... Pues ese sinte tan absolutamente psicodélico parece teletransportarte en el tiempo casi unos cuarenta años. Este elemento lo encontramos sobre todo en los primeros temas del álbum: ‘That´s Alright’, ‘Revelations’ y sobre todo ‘Introture – Goddess of Dreams’ un tema absolutamente marciano, con sonidos de pistola laser incluidos. Una flipada absoluta. Bien es cierto que esta no es la tónica global del CD, sobre todo la segunda parte tiene unos tintes mas folkies, parecidos a Changes, como decía al comienzo, con un carácter psicodélico. I can see Afterglow appealing to a wide range of tastes from those who enjoy 70's prog to people who dig quirky, yet dramatic folk music, and lastly to fans of whooshing and spacey 70's/80's synth music. Der zweistimmige Gesang intoniert starke Refrains und eindrucksvolle Track-Strukturen. Die gerne genommen Verbindungen zwischen elektronischen Elementen und klassischer Akustikgitarre werden hier punktgenau und stimmig zusammen gefügt. Beim ersten Durchhören mag der eine oder andere Part überraschen, doch mit der Zeit ergibt alles einen Sinn. [Afterglow è].caratterizzati da netto imprimatur progressivo come risalta più eloquentemente soprattutto dalle congiunte Introture/Goddess Of Dreams, combattute tra pompose sfuriate sintetiche e leggiadri flauti, ma pure nelle meno eccessive That's Alright e Fly Away, con la più misurata Sandy che è l'episodio che si preferisce, ballata dalle notevoli qualità seduttive. - Paolo Bertoni, Blow Up. Drums are mostly slow beats, while the synths and pianos have a 70's progressive feel, with a dose of dark ambience. As for the flute, it brings out the folk music edge in the music. ... Somit ist Afterglow letzendlich mehr als ein Dokument, dass nur für Changes-Fans interessant ist, auch wenn durch das verspielte Gitarrenspiel und Nicholas' Gesang deutlich die Parallelen erkennbar sind. A distanza di così tanti anni la qualità di Nick e Mark viene evidenziata meglio proprio nella fase acustica, che ne fa brillare la bontà compositiva, al di là degli arrangiamenti un po' datati che possiamo ascoltare nei pezzi registrati in studio: l'essenza psych/folk emerge al meglio in questo programma radio, vera perla dell'intero CD.
